G Suite does not include automatic backup and offers only minimal data protection. G Suite does not cover data loss caused by internal errors, malicious acts, ransomware, or other cybercrime. For example, if you delete a user, all data associated with that user’s account will be removed from Google. Relying solely on Google as a backup for G Suite means running the risk of losing your critical G Suite data forever.
Depending on your specific legal requirements, you can use Google Vault to meet legal data retention requirements, as Vault is designed to meet eDiscovery & compliance requirements. However, Vault is not designed for backup and recovery requirements—to ensure this, you will need a second application in addition to Google Vault.
Vault does not restore data to Google, but only allows data to be exported. Converting and uploading the data to the user account requires manual work, and in most cases, any previously applied labels are lost. In the case of ransomware, Vault cannot restore previous versions of files such as MS Word, PPT, or Excel, but only searches for the latest versions of the Drive file, without including deleted files. Further manual work is required for downloading, importing into Drive, etc. Data transfer between Google Vault users is time-consuming and complex; Google Vault does not allow for quick granular recovery.
