Data can be lost in the cloud too

G Suite does not include automatic backups and offers only minimal data protection. G Suite does not cover data loss caused by your own internal errors, malicious acts, ransomware or other cybercrime. For example, if you delete a user, all data associated with that user’s account is removed from Google. Relying solely on Google for G Suite backups means running the risk that your critical G Suite data could be lost forever.

Depending on your specific legal requirements, you can use Google Vault to meet statutory data retention requirements, as Vault is designed to meet eDiscovery and compliance requirements. However, Vault is not designed for backup and recovery requirements – to ensure this, you will need a second application in addition to Google Vault.

Vault does not restore data to Google; it merely enables data to be exported. Manual work is required to convert and upload the data to the user’s account, and in most cases any labels previously applied are lost. In the event of a ransomware attack, Vault cannot restore previous versions of files such as MS Word, PPT or Excel, but only searches for the latest version.
